In 1819, a troubled Bruce Wayne revives his father from the dead. The story is loosely based on Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein and the classic black-and-white film Frankenstein featuring Boris Karloff.
He is the father of Bruce Wayne (Batman), and husband of Martha Wayne. Wayne was introduced in Detective Comics #33 (Nov. 1939), the first exposition of Batman's origin story. It tells the story of an aged Bruce Wayne who returns from three years in hiding, training his followers and instigating a rebellion against Lex Luthor's dictatorial rule over the United States. Wunick had previously brought back the character Jason Todd from the dead in the series Batman: Under the Hood. The new limited series was meant to explain the missing years from Todd's life that had been left. Stories set early in Batman's career are commonly referred to as "Year One" stories, loosely meaning Bruce Wayne's first several years of crimefighting as Batman.
